Mozilla App Store To Launch Next Week

Users will be able to buy an app once and use it on any HTML5-enabled device, Mozilla says.

Earlier this month Mozilla laid out a roadmap for its Firefox browser over the course of 2012, and on Wednesday it made good on one key piece of those plans.

Specifically, the nonprofit announced that its long-anticipated Web app store will officially open for developer submissions when the Mobile World Congress exhibition kicks off next week.

“By building on open Web technologies like HTML5 and Mozilla-proposed APIs, the Mozilla Marketplace will enable developers to write one app that runs across devices and platforms,” Mozilla explained in its announcement.

Users, meanwhile, will be able to buy an app once and use it on any HTML5-enabled device, it added.

With games, media, music, productivity apps, and more, the Mozilla Marketplace will open up to consumers later this year.

'Write Once, Deploy Everywhere'

The Mozilla Marketplace will be the first operating system- and device-independent market for apps based on open Web technologies like HTML5, JavaScript, and CSS, Mozilla says.

Essentially, it aims to close what Mozilla calls a “technology gap” between Web and native apps and offer an alternative to the platform-specific app ecosystems that currently dominate the mobile world.

Toward that end, the Mozilla Web Apps platform aims to implement a "write once, deploy everywhere" approach so as to reduce the cost of creating, versioning, and maintaining applications while enabling a truly open, standards-based Web.

Included in the platform are new, Mozilla-proposed APIs that will be submitted to the W3C for standardization along with a new identity system for the Web that “puts users in control of their content, tying apps to the user and not the device or platform,” Mozilla says.

Also at Mobile World Congress, meanwhile, Mozilla will be showcasing projects including its open Boot to Gecko Web operating system for mobile devices and a preview of a new version of Firefox for Android that's faster and offers a personalized Web experience that can be synchronized across multiple devices, Mozilla says.

Given the highly divided, device-specific landscape of the mobile world, I'm full of hope that Mozilla will be able to succeed with its open, cross-platform approach to the mobile Web. Open is the way the mobile Web needs to be, and Mozilla is the natural leader in this area.

Mozilla ready to reveal app store

There's more than phones coming to Barcelona. The maker of Firefox says that the Mozilla Marketplace will open its doors to developers at next week's Mobile World Congress.

Mozilla changed the Internet once. Will lightning strike twice for the Firefox developer?

That's what the company hopes will happen at the Mobile World Conference in Barcelona next week when it unveils the Mozilla Web Apps platform, a tripartite approach to app building that will level the playing field for building apps, the company said in a statement today.

The key leg of the Mozilla Web Apps platform is the Mozilla Marketplace. The major part of the statement was devoted to revealing that the Marketplace will throw open its doors to developers for the first time in Barcelona. The company hopes that it will attract those interested in developing apps that will be able to run on multiple platforms and across devices. Mozilla said the store will follow its mission statement for an open Web by pushing open Web technologies, such as HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript.

Although Mozilla hasn't explicitly said so yet, it's expected that the Marketplace will also provide neutral territory for its upcoming mobile operating system, currently called Boot to Gecko, to sell and distribute apps. Apps written for the Mozilla Marketplace will only have to be bought once, after which Mozilla says they'll be usable on any HTML5-enabled device. Boot to Gecko is scheduled to get its first major public airing at the Barcelona conference, too.

Mozilla is dangling a potentially big financial carrot for developers with its Web Apps platform: cost savings. The company is hoping that the combination of open standards for development and a "write once, deploy everywhere" approach will entice developers. It's a great idea, but it's way behind the competition from Google and Apple--by years.

The second part of the Mozilla Web Apps platform will be a raft of recent and new Mozilla-proposed APIs that will be submitted to W3C for standardization. Although CNET has not yet confirmed this, it's most likely to be Mozilla's WebAPI project to give browser apps stronger hooks into device services, such as your contact list. As my colleague Stephen Shankland noted last week, Mozilla has agreed to merge WebAPI with the W3C-approved Device API project, which will strengthen the chances of WebAPI project surviving the Wild West mobile market.

That is no guarantee that they'll be adopted, though. Just because a codec or API is open, like WebM, is no guarantee that it'll quickly become popularized.

The third component of for Web Apps platform is the one we know the least about: BrowserID. Again, we don't have confirmation that this is specifically the "new identity system" that Mozilla mentions in its statement, but it fits with what we know about the company's recent projects.

If that sounds to you like Mozilla plans to go toe-to-toe with Google and Facebook login options, you're probably not far off the mark. Knowing as little as we do, it seems like Mozilla's ability to enact this part of its Web Apps plan will depend mainly on how often it's in situations where its login is the most logical one. This could be driven by whichever carriers or devices partner up with Mozilla, and the first of those announcements won't come until Barcelona.
