With the end of the world right around the corner, owning a cell phone that runs on a single AA battery and can hold a charge for a full 15 years may seem like a bit of overkill, but who’s to say you won’t be leading a Walking Dead-style posse of survivors as you work to repopulate civilization? You’re going to need a phone, is what I’m saying.

Sure, all the cell towers will be dead and everyone you really need to talk to will be a couple trailers over at most, but you can (try to, I guess, if you’re really reaching) apply the idea of this phone to a world that doesn’t end during the next winter solstice.

In that case, we’re looking at what may be the ultimate emergency cell phone.

The “SpareOne” (get it?) will sell for a paltry $50 sometime in the first quarter – no firm date has been set yet – and comes with an included Energizer Ultimate Lithium AA battery that’s capable of holding its charge until your current wardrobe goes out of style. Once you start actually using the phone, of course, it’s a different story, but it’ll still provide up to 10 hours of talk time – handy if you’re stranded somewhere waiting for help to arrive.

You’ll want to sign up for some sort of prepaid cell phone plan, too – the U.S. version is compatible with T-Mobile and AT&T – though keep in mind that calls to 911 are always free, so if it’s only to be used for emergencies, there’s no need to pay for a calling plan. “Emergency” calls to your unemployed friends asking them to TiVo the Kardashians for you, on the other hand, will cost you some minutes and only serve to accelerate the impending end of the world.
