HTC just raised the bar in terms of the number of megapixels for a smartphone. Today at CES 2012 the company announced plans to release the HTC Titan II. This is a new version of the smartphone based on Microsoft's Windows Phone that was first launched in November in the US. The biggest new feature is that it will have a rear facing camera with 16 megapixels, an astonishing number considering that eight megapixels is considered a lot in a smartphone.

The other major new feature with the HTC Titan II is that it has support for the faster LTE networks which has been a sticking point for previous Windows Phone-based devices. The HTC Titan II will go on sale in the US via AT&T "in the coming months". Pricing was not announced.

The other hardware features for the new smartphone are the same compared to the original HTC Titan. It will still have that big 4.7 inch screen, a 1.5 GHz Snapdragon S2 processor, a 1.3 megapixel front facing camera and of course Windows Phone 7.5 out of the box. We do have to wonder how people who bought the original Titan from AT&T back in November feel about a new version being announced only two months afterwards.
