Apple on Tuesday introduced new iPhone and iPod Touch models, which come with double the memory and also cost a $100 more than the previous models.

The iPhone is now available in a 16 GB version and costs $499, while the new iPod touch model features 32 GB of memory and also costs $499. As a comparison, the 8 GB version of the iPhone costs $399. The 16 GB version of the iPod touch costs $399 and the 8 GB version costs $299.

Both devices use Apple's Multi-Touch software and user interface for interacting with music, videos, photos, and the Web on a full touch screen. The new models come with the latest software enhancements, including a major one in theGoogle (NSDQ: GOOG) Maps application. Introduced in firmware update 1.1.3, the app now offers a GPS-like location and navigation capability.

The iPhone and the iPod touch also allow users to create Web Clips for their favorite Web sites, personalize the home screen (which until now has been static and unchangeable), and receive movies from Apple's iTunes Movie Rentals.

Apple launched its video rental service on iTunes last month at the Macworld conference, managing to sign up all the major studios, such as 20th Century Fox, Warner Bros., Disney, Paramount Pictures, Universal Studios, and Sony Pictures. The service is expected to have more than 1,000 films by the end of this month.

Late last month, AT&T (NYSE: T) introduced iPhone voice and data plans specifically for business users, who are likely to benefit most from international roaming. But they'll have to shell out an additional $25 a month on top of an existing data plan to get 20 megabytes of overseas usage or an additional $60 a month for 50 megabytes.
