  1. As with all things giant and conglomerate, Star Wars news usually comes through business announcements as often as anything else. Today is no exception, with StarWars.co announcing the first official details about our not-Episode VIII upcoming Star Wars movie, as well as confirming when the next trilogy installment will come our way. The hits: Gareth Edwards, Felicity Jones, Rian Johnson. December 16, 2016, and May 26, 2017. The spin-off film not connected to a trilogy will be called Star Wars: Rogue One, and will be directed by Gareth Edwards (Godzilla) and written by Chris Weitz (Cinderella, About a Boy, Antz). Felicity Jones — who was almost going to be Black Cat in a Sony Spider-verse before Amazing Spider-Man 2 bombed — is the first official cast member on board. It hits theaters on December 16, 2016. Disney President Bob Iger announced these details to shareholders this morning as well as confirming that Looper writer-director Rian Johnson will also be writing-directing the next trilogy installment, Star Wars Episode VIII. That movie is instead going to try to hit closer to the original’s released date: May 26, 2017 — forty years and a day after the release of Star Wars in 1977. We don’t really know what Rogue One is about or when it’s going to take place in the Star Wars canonical universe. The current press release says the idea came from Idustiral Light & Magic’s Chief Creative Officer John Knoll, who will also be producing. I can’t find anything that Kroll has said about having a Star Wars idea in the past, but that doesn’t mean it’s not out there. At different times during pre-production, people have thought this film was a Obi-Wan Kenobi solo movie, a Boba Fett movie, a young Han Solo movie and — most recently — a Sabine from Star Wars: Rebels movie. Last time I heard any information about it, it was suggested to me that all or some of those ideas are not mutually exclusive. With Sabine the Rebels character being a Mandalorian (with similar armor), young Boba Fett surviving the Battle of Geonosis in Episode II and virtually no one mentioning where Han Solo was before A New Hope, all of these ideas could still be on the table. “Rogue One” could also be a call sign, the leader of a squadron or pack of rogues, pirates, smugglers, or other morally questionable characters. This would lend some credence to rumors that this movie will cover how the Rebel Alliance came across the Death Star plans in between the original and prequel trilogies. All we know now is that we have a title, star, director and writer, which is more than we have for a lot of movies that we’re drooling over. What is Rogue One? The search begins now. http://www.geek.com/news/star-wars-rogue-one-is-your-next-star-wars-movie-release-1617825/
